Elizabeth Street in downtown Brownsville, Texas, has a fascinating history and legacy. The old street lamps, aging movie theater and federal building hint at the rich past. Cars were traveling down the street during a light mist of rain, as the street lamps lit the roadway, and yet it was hot and humid. I sought to capture all of this with a simple palette, using a metallic acrylic to tone the canvas, then applying thick dark paint like icing a chocolate cake before wiping away the paint to get back to lighter values and highlights.
