Nascence

"Nascence" is a portrait in egg tempera of my friend Andie. I call it this despite their face not being visible, because to me it's a complete portrait as it is, full of life and personality conveyed through the set of the shoulders, the particularity of their haircut with the flash of blue, the sense of imminent motion like the space between one breath and the next, and the tattoo which could tell a story all on its own. Egg tempera is a slow, careful and precise medium which easily tempts the artist into over-rigidity, and this is a tiny piece, yet I am very pleased with the energy of it: if I have conveyed even a fraction of the spirit of my friend in the beauty of the light from that day, I consider it a resounding success.
