Mate is a traditional Argentine drink, similar to tea, and drunk through a metal straw from a gourd encased with leather or metal. Alfajores are typical Argentine cookies. I was feeling nostalgic for the country of my birth, and made myself a snack. However, I was so charmed by the colors and setting, that I painted the scene first. No cookies survived!
